Syria, especially Aleppo, has long been a vital center of Western Armenian culture. After the Armenian genocide, the Armenian presence in the region grew significantly, and Aleppo became one of the key hubs where Western Armenian cultural life was not only preserved, but also developed and flourished. The outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011 shattered Syria’s social and cultural fabric, and the Armenian community was deeply affected. They experienced, and continue to experience, a massive exodus. Syria is once again engulfed in turmoil. Kevork Almassian, a well-known journalist originally from Aleppo, will join us to discuss recent developments in Syria and the dangers facing the Armenian community today.
