This event featured a panel of interdisciplinary colleagues from around the globe who discussed what it means to decolonize global health, how do we get there, and how medical students and others can be part of the solution in tangible ways.

There is an urgent need for a radical shift in power dynamics within the field of global health to increase health equity and autonomy, with decision-making and ownership moving to LMICs. This event will feature a panel of interdisciplinary colleagues from around the globe to discuss what it means to decolonize global health, how do we get there, and how medical students and others can be part of the solution in tangible ways. We will also discuss the nuanced and at times problematic language used within the movement, and alternative language that might be incorporated moving forward. Given that global health has its origins in colonialism, and we continue to work within neocolonial systems, we must challenge the status quo of taking an apolitical and a historical approach to health. With this expert panel event, we hope to create a space for critical reflection around how to address power imbalances in global health here at DGSOM and beyond.
