About the Event
Since October 7 of 2023, Israel has been in a continuous state of war on multiple fronts with the network of actors and organizations supported by and put in place by Iran. Over the last six months, Israel has been joined in this war with the United States. In this talk, General (Reserve) Tamir Hayman, Head of the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and former director of Israeli Defense Intelligence, will discuss the current state of the war between Israel and the United States on the one hand, and Iran on the other, its effects on regional and global security, and where it might go from here.
About the Speakers
Major General (Reserve) Tamir Hayman is the Executive Director of the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS). Prior to joining the INSS, Maj. Gen. (res.) Hayman was Chief of the IDF Intelligence Directorate from 2018-2021. During his 34 years of IDF service, Maj. Gen. (res.) Hayman held a wide range of command positions in the ground forces including operational combat experience in the security zone in Lebanon and in the Palestinian arena. Maj. Gen. (res.) Hayman joined the IDF General Staff in 2015, and served as commander of the National Defense College, while also acting as commander of the Northern Corps. His period of service in Intelligence was characterized by ongoing tension in the Palestinian arena, Gaza, and intense struggles aimed at limiting Iranian entrenchment in Syria and dealing with the Iranian challenge emerging throughout the Shia axis. Maj. Gen. (res.) Hayman holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics, and a master’s degree from the National Defense College.
Professor Steven E. Zipperstein (moderator) is the Director of the UCLA Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies. He teaches in the Department of Public Policy at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. He is a Visiting Professor at Tel Aviv University Law School and a member of the Adjunct Faculty at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. He serves as a Distinguished Senior Scholar at the UCLA Center for Middle East Development and as a Senior Fellow at The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation in the Netherlands. Zipperstein is the author of three peer-reviewed books, most recently The Legal Case for Palestine: A Critical Assessment (Routledge, 2024).
