About the Event
The latest round of fighting between Israel and Hamas has ended, but the issues that led to the escalation of violence in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel remain unresolved and volatile. Our expert panel will discuss these underlying issues and the reasons why they converged to bring about the most intense Israel-Hamas conflict since 2014 and the worst violence between Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel since the country's founding. The panel will also discuss how to prevent another round of conflict between Israel and Hamas, how to avoid another escalation of tensions in Jerusalem, and how to repair the damage to Jewish-Palestinian relations within Israel. Join us for this timely and important conversation.
About the Speakers
Areej Sabbagh-Khoury is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A former postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, New York University, Brown University and Tufts University, her research focuses on the political and historical sociology of Israeli and Palestinian societies. She co-edited two volumes of The Palestinians in Israel: A Guide to History, Politics, and Society (published in English, Hebrew and Arabic). Photo credit: Ilana Silverman Richter.
Daniel Sobelman is an assistant professor of International Relations at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a former Ha'aretz Arab affairs correspondent. He is a former research fellow with the International Security Program at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center. Dr. Sobelman is currently writing a book about the evolution of "resistance" in several Middle East regional conflicts, including the clash between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Yair Wallach is a senior lecturer in Israel Studies at SOAS, University of London. Dr. Wallach also is chair of the Center for Jewish Studies and a member of the Center for Palestine Studies, part of the London Middle East Institute at SOAS. His research deals with modernity and its transformative dimensions in Israel/Palestine. He is the author of the book, A City in Fragments: Urban Texts in Modern Jerusalem (2020).
Dov Waxman (Moderator) is The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Chair of Israel Studies at UCLA, and the director of the Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies. Previously, Dr. Waxman was a professor of political science, international affairs, and Israel studies, and the Stotsky Professor of Jewish Historical and Cultural Studies at Northeastern University. Professor Waxman's latest book is, The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: What Everyone Needs to Know (2019).
