The novel begins with three strangers on a train to St. Petersburg. The young Prince Myshkin is returning from a Swiss sanatorium where he was treated for an illness similar to epilepsy. He meets Rogozhin, a roguish young man who has an unhealthy obsession with a beautiful young woman, and a nosy government official named Lebedyev.
