Published from January 1917 to April 1919, The Korea Magazine was an English-language monthly publication that documented Korean culture, language, religion, and everyday life during the early years of the Japanese colonial period. It
serves as a valuable resource for understanding the complex social changes and educational conditions of this era from a foreign perspective.
This magazine features rich literary content and aims to enhance understanding of Korea’s culture, history, and educational landscape among domestic and international missionaries, as well as foreign readers. Its diverse articles explore traditional aspects of Korea, providing deep insights into the cultural exchanges between the East and West.
This lecture examines the magazine’s historical background, editorial composition, and key contributors, placing it within the broader landscape of missionary periodicals such as The Korean Repository, The Korea Review, and Transactions. The presentation will also highlight the magazine’s documentary value as a record of global perceptions of Korea in the early 20th century.
