This talk concerns Korean as a heritage language and the Korean diaspora. For historical, political and economic reasons, Koreans who have left Korea and traveled all over the world are living with their Korean identity. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Korean language is at the basis of maintaining such an identity. Korean as a heritage language is being passed down from the first generation of immigrants to the next generations through Korean language education at home, Korean language schools and bilingual schools. Especially, Korean Americans have been interested in heritage language education, such as Korean language schools called '한글학교(Hangul Hakkyo), from the early years of immigration. In this regard, this talk will present the history and the actual conditions of Korean language education as a heritage language of the diaspora and examine the significance of Korean language education.
