Corruption is a chronic disease that can occur anytime and anywhere as long as a society exists, regardless of whether the country is considered advanced or underdeveloped. White-collar crimes, with bribery charges in particular, are the main form of corruption in many countries, and they have all used different governmental approaches to prevent such crimes. However, the Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International noted the decline in South Korea’s ranking from 37 (out of 167 countries) in 2015, to 52 (out of 176 countries) in 2016. To better understand the reason for this increase in perceived corruption, Mr. Jonghyuk Bae will review various types of bribery charges in Korea and the legal issues surrounding these cases.
