Killing Memory: Ethnicity, Religion and the Destruction of Culture in the Balkan Wars of the 1990s

A public lecture by Andras Riedlmayer, Harvard University delivered on April 15, 2008.

Andras Riedlmayer is the Bibliographer in Islamic Art and Architecture at Harvard University and is in charge of the Documentation Center for Islamic Art and Architecture of the Aga Khan Program at Harvard's Fine Arts Library. He has served as an expert witness at the International Court of Justice in the case Bosnia and Herzegovina v. Serbia and Montenegro - Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (2006). His publications include "Ottoman Copybooks of Correspondence and Other Miscellanies as a Source for Political and Cultural History" in Acta Orientalia Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, 61.1-2 (2008); "Crimes of War, Crimes of Peace: Destruction of Libraries during and after the Balkan Wars of the 1990s." in Michle Cloonan and Ross Harvey [eds.] Preserving Cultural Heritage, (2007); and Destruction of Cultural Heritage in Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1992-1996: A Post-war Survey of Selected Municipalities (2002). He is also President of the Turkish Studies Association (2006-2008).

This lecture is part of the series on Islam in the Balkans cosponsored by the Center for Near Eastern Studies and the Center for European and Eurasian Studies.
