A lecture by Ambassador Maen Rashid Areikat, the Palestine Liberation Organization Representative to the U.S.
Duration: 37:16
Posted by: Center for Near Eastern StudiesIn the past, negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians have exhibited shortcomings and flaws, focusing on the process rather than the substance. Both sides were distracted by the daily events and failed to address the core issues. In assessing the process that started in 1991, the Palestinians have learned that putting an end to the conflict requires a different approach that deals directly with all permanent status issues. In his presentation, Ambassador Maen Areikat will address the myths surrounding the negotiations as well the lessons learned from previous rounds of negotiations, the current situation on the ground and the prerequisites needed to realize a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
