Geertz, Morocco, and Humor

Abstract of paper to be presented by Kevin Dwyer, American University in Cairo, at the conference "Islam Re-Observed: Clifford Geertz in Morocco"

I will explore the role of humor in Clifford Geertz’s work on Morocco. In doing this I will address some general themes in Geertz’s work, among them his approach to "data," "meaning," and anthropological "interpretation," and situate his writings on Morocco in the context of some of his earlier work on Indonesia and his more general theoretical essays.
