ISOP's Language Resource Program received $300,000 from the Department of Education for a three-year project to design, implement and evaluate and adaptable, computer-based template for the development of specialized reading programs for Heritage Language students. The web based interactive, self-paced instructional reading program template will enable Heritage Language students to develop reading skills in their ancestral languages up to an academic level of proficiency. Under the direction of Professors Russell Campbell (TESL and Applied Linguistics) and Shoichi Iwasaki (director, South and Southeast Languages and Cultures), researchers will develop and test the program using two languages Thai and Korean in order to evaluate its use for any language.
By making the template available on the World Wide Web, the project has the potential to provide millions of heritage language students the means to gain high-level competence in reading their ancestral languages through an efficient and effective means of learning. The inter-disciplinary project was initiated through a seed grant from the Divisions of Humanities and Social Sciences.
