The University of California, Los Angeles, seeks applications and nominations for the Paul I. and Hisako Terasaki Chair in the Study of Contemporary Japan, to be administered through UCLA's International Institute.
I am writing to invite applications and nominations for the Paul I. and Hisako Terasaki Chair in the Study of Contemporary Japan. Given the strength of our faculty in this area, we are now seeking to fill this position via an internal search, limited to members of the UCLA faculty. I have appointed a faculty committee (William Bodiford, East Asian Languages and Cultures; Helen Rees, Ethnomusicology; Carol Sorgenfrei, Theater; Michael Thies, Political Science; and Roger Waldinger, Sociology and chair of the committee) to undertake the search and recommend an appointment.
The successful applicant should be a tenured member of the UCLA faculty, with a record of sustained and significant contributions, via scholarship or creative work, to key issues of contemporary Japan. The holder of the Chair should have demonstrated a capacity to provide academic and administrative leadership. Responsibilities will include active involvement in the leadership of the Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies, including an initial five-year (renewable) term of service as Center Director, and participation in the International Institute and its relevant interdisciplinary programs. The appointment starting date is 1 July, 2010.
