Harvard Academy Scholar Program

Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies

Targeted Fields

Social sciences, history, law

Program Summary

The purpose of the Academy Scholars Program is to identify and support outstanding scholars who are at the start of their careers and whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences (including history and law) with an in-depth grounding in particular non-Western countries or regions. Those selected as Academy Scholars are given time, guidance, access to Harvard facilities, and substantial financial assistance as they work for two years conducting either dissertation or postdoctoral research in their chosen fields and areas.

The competition for these awards is open only to doctoral candidates (Ph.D. or comparable professional school degree) or recent recipients of these degrees who may already hold teaching or research positions. Candidates for advanced degrees must have completed all course work and general examinations by the time of application. Historically, competitive candidates have already made at least significant progress on their dissertations. Applications are welcome from any qualified person without
regard to nationality.

The amount of the stipend awarded will depend on the situation of the individual. Predoctoral Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $25,000, and postdoctoral Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $38,000. This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, and some health insurance coverage.
