Institute of International Education (IIE)
The Freeman-Asia Award Program was designed to encourage more American undergraduate students to pursue study abroad in East Asia and Southeast Asia. The Program began in 2001 and has supported over 1,500 students in study abroad programs in 15 countries since then.
Only 6% of U.S. students participate in study abroad travel to East or Southeast Asia. In order to address this imbalance, the Freeman-Asia Scholarships were designed to give need-based awards to undergraduate students who are dedicated to learning more about Asian languages and cultures. The funding comes from the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, and the Institute of International Education administers the program.
