Latin American Film and Media Project

The primary objective of the Latin American Film and Media Project is to foster research and teaching on diverse modes of audio-visual production throughout Latin America.

To this end, the Project's activities will have multiple components:

  • Collection development to increase UCLA's holdings of Latin American films and television programming
  • Course development, with the objective of creating undergraduate and graduate concentrations in Latin American film and media in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese
  • Regular screenings and discussions
  • Organization of lectures, conferences and symposia
  • Establishment of a regular program of visits by Latin American film and television professionals
  • Development of cooperative agreements with key Latin American institutions involving faculty and students exchanges and joint research and teaching initiatives
  • Publications, taking advantage of new electronic possibilities (e.g., the University of California's eScholarship Respository)

One of the major functions of the center will be to develop an electronic data with special focus on film, radio, television (including new video, cable, and satellite technologies data base), with possible future expansion to cover the press and the publishing industry as well as other Latin American countries.

Components may include some of all of the following:

A. Legislation. Compilation of major legislative acts regulating or supporting national film industries and cinematographic activities, and television and radio broadcasting.

B.  Statistics on production, circulation, and performance of audiovisual media.

C. Information on organizations (e.g. film distributors, television networks) and government institutions (e.g. government film agencies).

D. Filmography (film and television) including pertinent data: titles, producers, directors, actors, etc.
