Susanna Hecht is Professor of Urban Planning. Her research interests include the political economy of tropical rain forest development; women in development; international environmental politics; and environmental history. Her work has been influential in the theoretical debates about environment and development as well as in policy circles in multilateral agencies and Amazon countries. Among her publications: Development or Destruction: The Conversion of Tropical Forest to Pasture in Latin America, with T. Downing et al.; Agroecology and Small Farm Development, with Miguel Altieri; and Fate of the Forest: Developers, Destroyers, and Defenders of the Amazon.
Prof. Hecht, who holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Berkeley, has consulted for the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Dutch and British Overseas Development Councils. She maintains strong formal and informal advisory ties with various U.S. and Amazonian non-governmental organizations.
