Hasidic Courts: A photographic look inside Israel's ultra-orthodox communities

First of a five-part "Religion, State and Society" lecture series, co-sponsored by the UCLA Center for the Study of Religion

Gil Cohen-Magen presents his photographic study of the ultra-Orthodox in Israel, compiled in his recent book “Hasidic Courts.” This study is an expose of moments, surprises and impressions from the lives of Israel’s ultra-Orthodox, mostly anti-Zionist communities such as the Satmar Hassidic sect, and a rare glimpse into their beliefs and rituals. It provides a no-holds barred look through the lense at ceremonies and gatherings which have never been photographed by outsiders before. Cohen-Magen’s photographs are part of the current exhibition on Hasidic life at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gil Cohen-Magen is a photojournalist whose photographs have graced the front pages of some of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines. With a portfolio that ranges from the most violent scenes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to the closed world of ultra-Orthodox Hassidim, Cohen-Magen has captured the many faces of the Holy Land through his lens. A graduate of the Hadassah College of Jerusalem’s Photography program, Cohen-Magen spent 10 years working with the Reuters news agency. Born in 1971, Cohen-Magen lives in the city of Modiin, Israel.

Pay-per-space parking for Royce Hall can be found in Lot 5 or Lot 4

Parking Lot 5 (Closest to Royce)- $3/hr or $11/day

From Sunset Blvd., enter north campus at Royce Dr. (between Westwood Plaza and Hilgard Ave.). Proceed straight to Parking Structure 5, and proceed to level 6 for pay-per-space parking. This pay station accepts cash only. Cross footbridge on level 4 and follow signs to Royce Hall.

Handicapped parking for Royce Hall is available on level 4 for $4.00, but you must have a parking pass to enter. You may purchase a parking pass for level 4 at the kiosk at Westholme and Hilgard Avenues. The attendant will direct you from there to Parking Structure 5.

Parking Lot 4 - $3/hr or $11/day

From Sunset Blvd., enter north campus at Westwood Plaza and proceed straight to the underground parking structure. Pay stations will be located on the left-hand side. Lot 4 accepts cash and credit cards. This is the only lot that will accept credit card payments within the proximity of Royce Hall.
