The UCLA Center for Mexican Studies is pleased to announce the 2017 tutoring scholarship program thanks to funding by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and Parents Alliance. This funding will be available to undergraduate and graduate students of Hispanic/Latino origins involved in an innovative model led by the UCLA Labor Center to improve educational opportunities for low-wage immigrant families and communities. Specifically, students will tutor low-wage immigrant parents and their children in the Los Angeles area, 2 hours per week for 12 weeks, starting on the week of October 9, 2017. Student tutors will be trained in providing resources and support to parents of children in the LAUSD school system. While your tutoring sessions will be focused on supporting the youth learner, you will also be working with parents to navigate the school system to better support their learner.
Students will be required to attend a four-hour mandatory orientation on October 6 (11am-3pm) at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center, 675 S. Parkview St., Los Angeles, CA 90057. Students will be required to commute to their tutoring sites located in Downtown Los Angeles. Students should be flexible to tutor on Saturdays.
Tutoring experience not necessary; bilingual skills in Spanish-English a plus. This opportunity is open to DACA and undocumented students.
The amount of each award will be up to $2,400. The goal of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and Parents Alliance is to sponsor programs that contribute to the development of the Mexican community in the United States and to nurture its ties to Mexico.

Application Requirements
1) Unofficial copy of transcripts
2) Copy of financial aid letter
3) A copy of your Fall 2017 class schedule
4) Single-spaced one-page statement of your areas of expertise (i.e. math, government, science, college prep, reading-writing) and description how you would prepare, organize and implement a tutoring session with a LAUSD K-12 child/youth and parent in a subject area you are proficient in. This could include a subject like algebra or history or it could be about preparing for college applications if the student is older.
5) One academic or professional letter of recommendation
6) Commitment to participate in orientation (October 6th) and final presentation sessions (dates to be determined)
