CEES Funding Opportunities for UCLA Graduate Students

UCLA GRADUATE STUDENTS  

FLAS Fellowships and Summer FLAS Fellowships
There are no Department of Education funds available for the 2009-10 academic year. CEES normally offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to UCLA graduate students pursuing full-time academic year language and area coursework in a foreign language. Please check back after May 2010 for more information on the 2010-14 grant cycle.

Start Up Funding for UCLA Graduate Students
The Center for European and Eurasian Studies invites proposals for the following funding opportunities.

  1. For working groups or workshops: up to $1,200 to invite speakers to present a paper (finished or in progress) on European or Eurasian topics. Applications must include a two or three page proposal with a detailed budget, applicant’s C.V., and the C.V. of each invited speaker.
  2. For workshops or conferences initiated and organized by graduate students: up to $1,500 to support costs of inviting speakers presenting papers on European or Eurasian topics as well as partial support for conference infrastructure for events focused on Europe or Eurasia. Applications must include a preliminary proposal with a list of potential participants, their affiliations and paper topics, and budget. Other co-sponsorship sources should be listed as well.
  3. For language clubs, up to $500 to organize activities. Coordinators must provide a C.V. and a proposal including the language focus, frequency of meetings, number of participants, and the details of activities planned. Activities that promote lesser-taught languages are especially encouraged.

All recipients must provide CEES with a summary of activities held and a full accounting of monies spent.

Conference Travel Funds for Graduate Students
UCLA graduate students who will be presenting conference papers with a European or Eurasian focus may apply to CEES for travel funds if departmental sources have already been exhausted. Students are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in travel funds over the course of two academic years. To apply for travel funds students must provide a documented airfare estimate from an airline, travel website, or UCLA travel, an abstract of the paper, a conference program or other proof that the conference paper has been accepted (maximum 5 pages-edit if necessary), and a short, electronically submitted letter from the student's advisor indicating his or her endorsement of the student's participation in the conference. CEES travel funds may only be used to cover the cost of airfare. They do not cover hotel, conference registration fees, or ground transportation. Proof of payment for the ticket must be submitted at the completion of the trip in order for the reimbursement to be processed.

Dissertation/Pre-Dissertation Fellowships
CEES awards summer pre-dissertation and dissertation fellowships up to $5,000 to UCLA graduate students to conduct research abroad in European and/or Eurasian area studies. Applicants will be required to submit a CV, an abstract of their research of no more than 100 words and a description of the proposed summer research project of no more than two typed pages. This description should include a detailed outline of the research agenda and how the grant would further it. An itemized budget and two letters of recommendation from faculty members are also be required. One of the letters of recommendation should be from the students’ principal advisor.

French Dissertation/Pre-Dissertation Fellowships 
In the summer of 2010 CEES will award summer pre-dissertation and dissertation fellowships up to $5,000 to UCLA graduate students to conduct research in Europe on French or Francophone studies. Applicants will be required to submit a CV, an abstract of their research of no more than 100 words, and a description of the proposed summer research project of no more than two typed pages. This description should include a detailed outline of the research agenda and how the grant would further it. An itemized budget and two letters of recommendation from faculty members are also be required. One of the letters of recommendation should be from the students’ principal advisor.

Language Study Grants
CEES awards summer Language Study Grants up to $3,000 to UCLA graduate students to study a European or Eurasian language as part of their research preparation. Applicants should submit an abstract outlining their summer activities, a language study program agenda, an itemized budget and two letters of recommendation. One of the letters should evaluate the student’s knowledge of the language to be studied.
