Undergraduate International Relations Society Constitution
Article 1: Name
The official name of the club shall be the “UCLA Undergraduate International Relations Society.” The abbreviation or short name of the club shall be “UIRS.”
Article 2: Purpose
The purpose of UIRS shall be to:
- Promote the International Relations and related programs at UCLA, and
- Host speaking events in association with the Burkle Center and other related organizations with prominent members of the global international relations community, and
- To present and develop greater undergraduate understanding of the diverse opportunities within International Relations, and
- To create a forum which fosters debate and discussion of relevant international relations issues, and
- Provide information on graduate programs in international relations, both at UCLA and elsewhere
Article 3: Membership
Membership is open to all undergraduates of the University of California Los Angeles. The Undergraduate International Relations Society, in accordance with applicable Federal and California State law and University of California policy, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, citizenship, or medical condition. Meetings and events are open to anyone. Membership in this organization is based solely on criteria stated in Article IV. The Undergraduate History Association will always function in a respectful and open capacity. There is a one-time only membership fee of $10 that covers miscellaneous costs such as printing, etc.
Article 4: Executives
President
The responsibility of the President is to:
- Be ultimately responsible for all actions of the club, and
- Be responsible for the overall direction of the club, and
- Be responsible for coordinating the responsibilities of the (3) vice presidents, and Run the speaking, informational, and social events hosted by UIRS, andBe present at all UIRS meetings and be present or send an appropriate representative to all UIRS sponsored events.
- Qualifications: The president of UIRS must be at least a 3rd year and have held at least on other position prior to running
Vice Presidents
Relations with School VP responsibilities are to:
- Maintain with UCLA regarding our events and general focus, and
- Work toward creating a better International Relations program at UCLA, and
- Work toward greater funding from UCLA through partnership with the treasurer, and Keep advisor(s) informed as to our goals and accomplishments, and Be the primary liaison between UIRS and other groups on the UCLA campus.
Burkle Center / Speaker VP responsibilities are to:
- Arrange and maintain all relations with the Burkle Center at UCLA, and
- Coordinate all speaking events including non-Burkle center talks, and
- Maintain communications regarding publicity, etc. with the Burkle Center
Internship / Career Opportunity VP responsibilities are to:
- Work toward compiling a complete list of on-campus opportunities within the IR field, and
- Be responsible for organizing an “IR opportunity fair,” and
- Be responsible for the UIRS Journal, and
- Be responsible for compiling graduate opportunities at UCLA
Public Relations VP responsibilities are to:
- Coordinate the activities of the First Year representative, and
- Coordinate the activities of the Media/Print Materials Chair, and
- Be responsible for the official publications of the organization, and
- Coordinate recruitment processes.
Treasurer’s responsibilities are to:
- Apply for funding from various sources for the club, and
- Maintain the financial records of the club, and
- Assist with the speaking, informational and social events hosted by the club
Secretary’s responsibilities are to:
- Keep accurate and complete, and comprehensive records of meetings, and
- Keep accurate and complete records of meeting attendance, and
- Assist VP with UIRS Journal, etc.
First Year Representative’s responsibilities are to:
- Promote UIRS’s events in relevant first year courses
Media Chair’s responsibilities are to:
- Create and maintain an updated and functional website, and
- Be responsible for all print materials related to UIRS, and
- Assist with speaking, informational, and social events hosted by UIRS.
Article 5: Finances
The sources of UIRS funding will be provided by:
- All members of UIRS will be charged a one-time fee of $10
- The Burkle Center for International Relations
- The Student Programming Office at UCLA
Article 6: Meetings
There shall be a minimum of two meetings per quarter. A minimum of seven days notice must be given to members in order for a meeting to be considered valid, unless in the case of a overriding emergency requiring the unanimous consent of UIRS’s executives. Quorum will be set at 5 members, including the executives.
Article 7: Elections
Elections for the club executives are to be held no later than 6th week of Spring quarter. Nominations for positions should be made no later than 5th week of Spring quarter. The term of office shall take effect from summer to the following Spring quarter, a full one-year term.
Article 8: Amendments
An amendment to the UIRS constitution can only be proposed by the executive board and must be ratified by a __ vote of approval by the general membership. Quorum, as described in Article 6, is required for any amendment to be ratified.
