Director's Welcome

From the challenges in Afghanistan and Iran, to the global financial crisis and the swine flu threat, nations shape world politics through conflict and cooperation. In the 21st century, however, states are not the only significant actors: powerful social, economic, technological, and environmental forces increasingly connect, align, and divide individuals around the planet. To understand the complex interactions among all these actors and forces requires careful and thoughtful analysis.

The Burkle Center’s mission is to provide that analysis and to bring to the UCLA and Los Angeles communities the best and brightest minds in the fields of international relations and foreign policy.

The Burkle Center draws together faculty and students from across UCLA in an effort to explore and shape debate on global issues. We are the primary forum for the interdisciplinary study of international affairs at UCLA and a significant sponsor of research, teaching, and outreach on campus.

I encourage you to explore our website, attend our events, and contribute to our efforts to better understand our world.
