New Winter Course: Cross-Cultural Currents in Theater

The class considers twentieth and twenty-first century experiments in cross-cultural performance, emphasizing fusions created by western and asian artists.

Open to All Students, no prerequisites

Some of the artists and theorists studies include: Artaud, Brecht, Yeats, Peter Brook, Peter Sellers, Robert Wilson, Ariane Mnouchkine, Yukio Ninagawa, Tadashi Suzuki, Julie Taymor, David Henry Hwang and/or others.

We will consider operas such as Madame Butterfly, broadway musicals such as the King and I, plays such as M. Butterfly, and dance/ performance art such as Butoh and Takazuka.

Lots of videos and attendance at siutable productions during the quarter.  Students will be encouraged to create group projects for class presentation.
