Chinese Language Scholarship

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. (TECRO - Headquarters in Taipei, Taiwan) is offering a one-year CHINESE LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in studying at the Mandarin Training Center, National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, during the academic year 2002-2003.
The one-year scholarship covers a monthly stipend of NT$25,000 (NT$35 = U.S. $1, subject to change). Successful applicants are responsible for all housing, tuition fees, health insurance, and travel costs.
*full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an institution of higher education in the United States with two years of undergraduate study completed by the time the fellowship begins.
*a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale
*must provide a written statement that indicates intent to enroll in a U.S. graduate program no later than 2003 if scheduled to graduate in 2002.
*sufficient Chinese language proficiency in speaking and listening to be able to satisfy basic survival needs and maintain a very limited conversation on familiar topics; sufficient comprehension to read very simple connected written material in a form equivalent to usual printing and typescript.
*a student selected by TECRO for a scholarship is required to have a pre-departure medical examination, the results of which must indicate that the awardee is physically and psychologically healthy. This examination must include a test of infectious diseases including the HIV virus.
December 20, 2001. Notification of results are in late April 2002.
