Details, 2013 Summer Research Exchange at PKU


The Joint Research Institute (JRI) in Science and Engineering by UCLA and Peking University (PKU) is offering scholarships to UCLA students for the 2013 Summer Research Exchange at Peking University in Beijing, China.


Program dates: July 1, 2013 – September 6, 2013

The ten week program between July 1 and September 6 is designed for UCLA students to participate in advanced research in science and engineering while gaining valuable international experience during the summer period. Each student is required to work in a research lab fulltime with PKU faculty and graduate student mentors on research projects jointly designed by their advisors at PKU and UCLA. They also have the opportunity to take 4-hour Chinese classes every week and to participate in various sightseeing tours in and around Beijing during weekends. 

 

Eligibility

  • UCLA undergraduate and graduate students in the sciences, engineering, and medicine  
  • Undergraduate applicants should be in their 3rd of 4th year at the time of applying, with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Graduate students should have a minimum GPA of 3.3
  • Applicants must have experience performing research in a laboratory at UCLA
  • Chinese language background is not required

 

Number of Awards

JRI anticipates awarding up to 12 students.

 

Funding

For undergraduate students, funding will include

  • $3,000 USD supplementary scholarship
  • reimbursement up to $1,000 for roundtrip airfare, from either Los Angeles or San Francisco

For graduate students, funding will include

  • $4,000 USD supplementary scholarship
  • reimbursement up to $1,000 for roundtrip airfare, from either Los Angeles or San Francisco

The scholarships will be dispersed in two installments, half in spring quarter, half at mid-way through summer quarter. Airfare reimbursement will be disbursed after return to U.S. Selected students must arrange for airfare, visa, and other miscellaneous travel costs in advance of the program.

JANUARY 2 – WINTER QUARTER BEGINS

  • Application deadline - Monday February 18
  • Admission notifications – March 1
  • Communication with PKU advisors - ongoing March-June
  • Info Session II (visas, Chinese classes, PKU advisors, preparations...) – early March
  • International Student Application materials due - Wednesday March 13
  • Enroll in Chinese class for Spring, arranged by JRI

MARCH 22 – WINTER QUARTER ENDS

MARCH 27 – SPRING QUARTER BEGINS

  • Purchase plane ticket – by Monday April 1
  • Students receive first half of scholarship – Wednesday May 1
  • Info Session III/Chinese Presentations – Thursday May 30
  • Lab research plans due – Monday June 3
  • Students receive proof of UCOP travel insurance – by Friday June 7

JUNE 14 – SPRING QUARTER ENDS

  • Depart for Beijing – Saturday June 29
  • Welcome Session and dinner at PKU – Monday July 1
  • Research plan due - 1-2 weeks into program
  • Mid-term report due - 4-5 weeks (how are research and program going)
  • Students receive second half of scholarship money - Monday July 29
  • Poster due – Tuesday September 3
  • Final report due - 8-10 pages, PPT – Thursday September 5
  • Poster Session – Friday September 6
  • Provide feedback - September

 

Course credit

Students may be eligible for Independent Research course credits upon completion of the program.

 

Application materials

Applications will be accepted online at http://apply.international.ucla.edu/?ii, JRI Summer Research Application 2013, with the following:

  • Resume
  • Letter of recommendation.  You may choose one of JRI's UCLA faculty members, an advisor, or professor in your field who knows you well.  If your preferred recommender is not on this list of JRI members, please ask him/her to contact JRI Program Coordinator Larissa Harrison, lharrison@international.ucla.edu.
  • The name of a PKU faculty member with whom you would like to work over the summer
  • Personal statement indicating research interests and commitment to spend ten weeks at PKU during summer 2013

 

Deadline

All materials must be uploaded to the online application site by 11:59pm February 26 2013.

Applications will be reviewed by a JRI faculty committee and students notified of decisions by March 1.

 

Accommodations

Students will stay together in safe and comfortable lodging convenient to campus, either in PKU dormitories, or a hotel.  At minimum, lodging will consist of standard double rooms with private bathroom. Amenities will include TV, air conditioning, and internet.

 

Logistics

There will be two pre-departure information sessions, and Chinese languages courses to be arranged for the Spring Quarter.

All participants should book tickets on the same flight, either out of Los Angeles or San Fransico.

 

Visa for China

Once a flight is booked, students will arrange their own visa, including costs, through the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles, visa application material.  Each student will procure an F visa for entrance into China for the purpose of studying, and have at least six months of remaining validity in passports. JRI will provide an admissions letter and proof of accommodation, which are required for F visa.
