MarySue V. Heilemann, PhD, RN, FAAN is an Associate Professor in the UCLA School of Nursing and an Associate Program Director of the UCLA National Clinician Scholars Program in the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine. Fueled by qualitative input from participants, and in collaboration with community partners, Dr. Heilemann integrates issues related to motivation, resilience, intergenerational cultural expectations, and gender in her work. Based on her three-fold area of expertise (media-based interventions, methodologically-driven qualitative research, and mental health), Dr. Heilemann has developed a web-app intervention using transmedia storytelling in Spanish and English to discreetly connect untreated Latinas to needed resources for depression and anxiety. This groundbreaking work led to being a delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2018 when the focus was "IT and digital communication for women and girls worldwide.” Dr. Heilemann's commitment to research designs that focus intensely on participants’ perspectives and experiences is rooted in the use of robust methodology that maximizes social justice in research and has led to multiple collaborations in and outside the U.S.
