SPRING 2019: Call for Undergrad Interns & Research Assistants

ASC INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH & COMMUNITY-ORIENTED INTERNSHIPS

Interested in interdisciplinary research, publishing, and developing professional skills while working on projects that have community impact? Apply now for spring internships and research assistant positions with the UCLA African Studies Center (ASC) and gain experience working as part of a creative and collaborative team—with future opportunities for travel and work abroad! Students from all backgrounds encouraged to apply by Friday April 12th.

Interns & Research Assistants will collaborate with the ASC team and Deputy Director on multiple initiatives, including: 

1. Interdisciplinary research projects on diverse areas such as human rights and the refugee crisis, economically and environmentally sustainable community responses to climate change, culturally sensitive approaches to providing healthcare, arts activism to empower at-risk youth, and more...

2. Redesigning the Center’s website, graphics, logos and branding  

3. Curating exhibitions and displays (within Center space, for special events and collections)

4. Conducting community outreach locally, nationally, and internationally (assessing and responding to community needs through public service projects)

5. Developing an internationally-focused professional development and research certificate program for students 

6. Developing student journals and magazines, and writing, editing and publishing as part of the editorial team

7. Utilizing social media platforms to share Africa's rich histories, cultures, entrepreneurship and activism through visually striking photography and compelling narratives. 

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Background in Africa not required, but enthusiasm to learn, and ability to work independently and as part of a team are musts. Students in all majors encouraged to apply!
  • *You may indicate interest in one or several of the areas listed above in your application. 
  • *Spring internships require no more than 6 hours/week commitment and are unpaid. Students who work well with our team will have priority consideration for future paid opportunities and to travel for and work on our projects abroad.
