Support the UCLA International Institute
"Especially in the slump we're in now, we recognize that the competitiveness of the United States is dependent upon our ability to effectively work in a global market."
UCLA Chancellor Gene Block (October 2008)
"The internationalization of the university is coming into focus now as something not only that just happens, but something that has to be planned for, has to be coordinated, and has to be overseen."
Nicholas Entrikin, Vice Provost — International Studies
The UCLA International Institute builds the local and global networks of learning that prepare leaders to meet 21st-century challenges in every field of endeavor.
Through multidisciplinary centers and programs dedicated to the study of world regions and global issues, the Institute fosters learning about and active participation in the contemporary world. It stimulates and disseminates innovative scholarly work by affiliated and outside faculty through collaborative research, conferences, symposia and publications programs. It also coordinates formal agreements concerning student exchange and research collaboration between UCLA and foreign universities.
Each year, affiliated faculty members pursue research that crosses borders and the boundaries of academic disciplines; hundreds of students earn interdisciplinary degrees focusing on a world region or on themes such as globalization, Islamic civilization, and economic, political and social development worldwide; and scores of precollegiate and college teachers from around Southern California and the nation attend Institute-sponsored training workshops.
UCLA offers courses in more than 40 languages and consistently ranks among the top U.S. universities in international education. During the 2007-08 academic year, the campus welcomed more than 5,500 foreign students and sent more than 2,000 U.S. students to earn academic credit abroad. With scholars and world dignitaries visiting regularly for lectures, courses, conferences and consultation, the Institute is a major node for cross-cultural intellectual exchange. This activity at once enriches metropolitan Los Angeles and is enriched by the participation of its diverse communities.
We invite you to join the Institute's efforts by visiting our website, attending our events, learning about our programs, and making a contribution to international education. Private philanthropy makes a critical difference in the ability of the International Institute and its constituent institutes, centers and programs to carry out their mission of educating world citizens.
