Staff and faculty from the UCLA International Institute and its affiliated research centers and programs gathered in the Institute's Bunche Hall conference room April 10 to give awards to staff members and student workers for their outstanding services. Nominations had been submitted beforehand by faculty directors and staff supervisors from throughout the Institute.

In a festive atmosphere, four staff members and one student worker were given awards of a merit certificate and cash awards, while four additional staff members and two student workers were given honorable mentions, which included a gift certificate. The reception and presentations were presided over by Institute Vice Provost Geoffrey Garrett and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Sue Fan.

The criteria this year over and above generally great work were the nominee's impact on multiple units in the Institute, and in some cases around the campus, as well as exceptional contributions to collaborative work with their colleagues.

The awards went to staff members Emily Mohajeri Norris, Administrative Director of the Education Abroad Program; Kathryn Paul, Public Affairs Analyst at the Language Resource Center; Tara Wake, Staff Personnel and Payroll Manager at the International Institute; and Clayton Dube, Assistant Director of the Asia Institute. The student award went to Amy Jamison, an MA student in African Studies who works as a student assistant in Interdepartmental Degree Program counseling and the Education Abroad Program.

The staff honorable mentions went to Azeb Tadesse, Assistant Director of the African Studies Center; Carolyn Ramirez-La Faso, Student Counselor for Latin American Studies and graduate programs; Vera Wheeler, Program Administrator of the European and Eurasian Studies Center; and Nina Moss, Assistant to the Director of the Latin American Center.
