The UCLA Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies hosts the 18th Annual Graduate Symposium on Japanese Studies. The 18th Annual Graduate Symposium will take place on Friday, November 1, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Royce Hall Room 306. No RSVP required but seating is limited.

Friday, November 01, 2013
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
306 Royce Hall, Room 314
Los Angeles, CA 90095

Through an examination of the relationship between ritual, community, and transgression our conference explores the historical production and standardization of social practices and imaginaries, the notions of similarity and difference that they create and entrench, and the potentials and pitfalls that adhere to violation of their forms. Taking the category of Japan studies as a point of departure, we invite submissions on topics that investigate interruption and disjuncture of communities at   social,   cultural,   economic,   and   epistemological  levels,   with   the   intent   of connecting disparate academic disciplines in the social sciences and humanities.

The conference will include a keynote presentation by Professor Harry Harootunian.

In the interest of cohesion, our panels have been broken into three thematic fields:

I.          Pre-ÔÇÉmodern Studies (Art History, History, Literature, Religious Studies).

II.        Modern Humanities (Art History, History, Literature, Media Studies, Visual Studies).

III.       Social   Sciences   (Anthropology,   Geography,   Linguistics,   Ethnomusicology,

Political Science, Sociology).
