Announcement
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sondra Hale and Professor Gabriel Piterberg as Interim Co-Directors of the Gustav E. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES).
Sondra Hale is Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Gender Studies at UCLA; former Co-Chair of Islamic Studies IDP; and former chair of the Department of Gender Studies. She is Co-Founder and former Co-editor of The Journal of Middle East Women's Studies (JMEWS) and has served as President of the Association for Middle East Women's Studies (AMEWS). Prof. Hale has published Gender Politics in Sudan: Islamism, Socialism and the State (also published in Arabic in 2011) and many articles and book chapters on gendered conflict and genocide; social movements; international gender studies; the politics of memory; and diaspora studies. She is currently co-editing a book on Sudan's Killing Fields: Context for Disintegration, and she recently published a co-edited book on feminist art. In 2011 she received two special awards: a Life-Time Scholarly Achievement Award from AMEWS and another from Salmmah Women's Resource Center (Sudan) - In Recognition of Her 50 Years of Commitment and Valuable Contributions in Support of the Sudanese Women's Movement. Prof. Hale is the founder and Coordinator of California Scholars for Academic Freedom.
Gabriel Piterberg is a Professor of History at UCLA. He teaches and writes on the History of the Ottoman Empire and the Mediterranean; and such modern topics as Zionism, Israel/Palestine, and settler colonialism. In addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters, he published An Ottoman Tragedy: History and Historiography at Play (the University of California Press, 2003, Turkish edition, 2005), and The Returns of Zionism: Myths, Politics and Scholarship in Israel (Verso, 2008). Prof. Piterberg writes for New Left Review and London Review of Books. He was elected the Alistair Horne Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford (2005/6), and delivered the Leonard Stein Lectures at Balliol College, Oxford (Spring 2007).
I would like to recognize and thank Susan Slyomovics for her outstanding service as CNES Director for the past five years. Her efforts and collaborations with campus units helped to maintain a high level of participation and interest in CNES-sponsored activities despite budgetary challenges. Her energy and steadfast support of academic activity related to the Near East has been pivotal to advancing the mission of CNES as a Title VI National Resource Center and furthering its research and educational goals. We wish Susan the best in her sabbatical year.
Please join me in welcoming Professors Sondra Hale and Gabi Piterberg in their new roles in the International Institute.
Sincerely,
Cindy Fan
