Taiwan-US Economic and Security Relations

The Foreign Minister of Taiwan, David Y.L. Lin, will address the Los Angeles World Affairs Council over dinner on March 11th. He will talk about Taiwan’s business, economic and security relations with the US, as well as Taiwan’s cross-straits relations with mainland China.

Mr Lin has more than three decades of diplomatic experience. Before being appointed foreign minister last September, Mr Lin served as Taipei’s chief representative to the European Union in Brussels from 2010. He was vice minister of foreign affairs in Taipei from 2008 to 2010. He has also been posted to Indonesia, Houston, Texas, South Africa and Grenada and St Vincent. He is a graduate of National Chengchi University in Taiwan and he has a Master of Science from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Taiwan is in the middle of a very volatile region, and shares a claim to the disputed Diaoyutai islands with the Peoples’ Republic of China and Japan (which refers to the islands as the Senkakus). These islands have recently been the focus of heightened tensions between China and Japan, and are in the middle of very busy shipping routes serving much of East Asia. Mr. Lin will bring his experience to bear on the very weighty issues that are at stake in this economically dynamic but politically fragile region.
