Celebrating the Snake

The Center of Chinese Studies wishes everyone a prosperous and happy new year!

On Sunday, Febuary 10th, the Center for Chinese Studies helped kick off the Year of the Snake with a celebration at the Hammer Museum! (Event page).

Over 1,000 people came to the Hammer event which was co-sponsored by the Museum, the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology and the UCLA Confucius Instiute.  Under a bamboo-lined courtyard  decorated with vibrant red Chinese lanterns, guests of all ages spent the afternoon creating their own paper lanterns, practicing Chinese calligraphy, playing ping pong, making "red envelopes" for friends, and learning about the Los Angeles Chinese food scene from Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic, Jonathan Gold, and food author, Jennifer 8 Lee.   Demonstrations and performances of Chinese music and dance provided by the China Ensemble of UCLA (led by Li Chi) and  students of Venice's Broadway Elementary School Mandarin Immersion program took place throughout the day.  The Ammo Restaurant at the Hammmer prepared a special menu of Chinese New Year foods and teas for those in attendance.
