Revolutionary Culture: Vasconcelos, Indians, Photographers, and Calendar Girls

This re-evaluation of José Vasconcelos’s programs as Secretary of Education focuses on his efforts to create a standard national culture based on the Mestizo, or as he later said, the Cosmic Race. It examines his disagreements with anthropologists over  appropriate policies for indigenous people. The efforts of the Ministry of Education unexpectedly had a major influence on the
popular culture of Mexico, creating social stereotypes and revolutionary heroes.

Bill Beezley’s research treats popular culture in modern Mexico. His articles include, "Performance and Public Sphere: Itinerant Puppet Theatre in Nineteenth century Mexico City " in The Public Sphere in Mexico, ed. by Gareth Jones; “Arte en la calle. Los Títeres de la Compañía de Rosete Aranda y La imagen del Mexicano,” en La Mirada, mirada. Transculturalidad e imaginarios del México revoluionario, 1910-1945; “Cómo fue que El Negrito salvó a México de los franceses: las fuentes populares de la identidad nacional,” Historia Mexicana.
