Exploring the Meanings of Jewish Sovereignty - A two-day International Conference
First day of a two-day conference examining the impact of Jewish sovereignty - 60+ years after the creation of the state of Israel - on Jewish life and culture, and relations between the Jewish and the non-Jewish worlds.

Royce Hall, Room 314
Humanities Conference Room
UCLA Campus
Los Angeles, CA United States
The founding of the state of Israel in 1948 marked a dramatic watershed in the history of the Jewish people. Zionism, from its earliest days, envisioned a return to Palestine and the establishment of a sovereign Jewish state as catalysts in a revolutionary transformation of Jewish life and the Jews’ place in the world. Jewish life seems indeed to have been transformed by the creation of the state, albeit not always in the ways envisioned or anticipated by Zionist thinkers.
Sixty-four years after establishment of the state of Israel, this conference aims to shed new light on its impact, and explore key questions posed by the advent of Jewish sovereignty, including:
-
The impact of statehood on relations between Jews in Israel and abroad
-
The effect on relations between Jews and non-Jews
-
Sovereignty and the image of the Jew in the modern world
-
The challenges of a sovereign Jewish state with an Arab minority and its implications for Jews and Arabs
-
Changes in religious thought, liturgy, ritual, and practice under the impact of a Jewish state
-
The effect of statehood and Hebrew culture on Jewish cultural creativity in literature, music, art and more
The conference will bring together leading scholars from Israel and the U.S. in history, sociology, political science, law, philosophy and literature to address these questions and implications for the future.
This academic conference is also intended to be accessible to a non-academic audience. Proceedings are free and open to the public.
