The Global Telenovela: The Case of Brazil

A symposium featuring TV Globo writer Glória Perez and Globo’s Director of International Sales, Raphael Correia, who will discuss the global reach of the Brazilian telenovela from narrative/aesthetic and commercial perspectives.

Glória Perez is one of Brazil’s most important and prolific television writers. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she studied Law and Philosophy before graduating with a degree in History from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Among Glória Perez ‘s telenovelas are O Clone (The Clone, 2001), which is set in Brazil and Morocco, América (2005), which deals with Brazilian immigrants to the United States, and Caminho das Índias (India – A Love Story, 2009), which is set in Brazil and India. All of these telenovelas have had remarkable success both within Brazil and worldwide.

Raphael Correia, Director of International Sales at TV Globo, will be discussing the worldwide reach of Globo telenovelas and mini-series from a commercial perspective. In 2010, TV Globo licensed over 60 productions in 91 countries in 33 different languages and the international channel currently reaches 115 countries. According to Variety, Glória Perez’s telenovela India – A Love Story, has been licensed in more than 90 countries.

The symposium forms part of the series, "On Brazilian Cosmopolitanism," sponsored by the Center for Brazilian Studies.
