The UCLA African Studies Center, South African Airways and Vibration Booking present the internationally acclaimed marimba percussionist and composer Bongani in concert.
Bongani is an internationally acclaimed chromatic marimba/marimba percussionist and composer. For the past twenty years Bongani has amazed audiences in both South Africa and internationally. His work includes collaborations with world-renowned vibraphonists like Stephon Harris of New York, Pascal Schumacher of Belgium, Magda de Vries of Japan, and the University of Cape Town Big band headed by Mike Campbell. Bongani has also played with several other musicians such as Brubeck Brothers, Morris Goldberg, Willie Van Zyl Haubrich, Shannon Mowday-just to name a few. Bongani is currently working as a Director of Music and resident marimbas player at the Marimba Cafe. He also heads the ever popular Phambili Marimba and Brass Ensemble, Kalimbe and Intsholo.
Bongani also co-produced and directed the opening ceremony of the World Association of Engineers in October 2005. The Bongani Sotshononda Project is a 13-piece ensemble that comprises of him on the chromatic four and a half octave. The Marimba Extravaganza, a 26-piece ensemble, is also one of Bongani's creations. This marimba orchestra tells us the history of marimbas and is narrated and directed by Bongani Sotshononda himself. Bongani's debut album, "Indigenous Jazz", was released in the spring of 2010.
Bongani will have additional performance at the Joint on Friday, February 18th and Sunday, February 20th.
