A film by Peruvian director Claudia Llosa. Sponsored by AFI Fest 2009 and the Latin American Institute.
Winner of the Golden Bear for best film at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival, this exquisitely original allegory details the lingering trauma from the decades-long conflict in Peru that was passed on through la teta austada—milk of sorrow—to women including the beautiful, enigmatically silent Fausta (Magaly Solier).
The story revolves around Fausta, the product of a rape inflicted on her mother during two decades of rebel violence in which around 70,000 people died or disappeared. After her mother's death, the virtually silent Fausta (played by Magaly Solier) is determined to bury her in her native village but in order to do so must confront the malaise that afflicts her like a sickness.
