Professor Paulo de Medeiros received his PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is Professor and Chair of Portuguese Language & Culture at the Universiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands. His areas of study are Luso-Brazilian Literature, Modern Literary Theory, and 20th Century Narrative. In his lecture Professor de Medeiros will discuss the film “O Pai Tirano” (1941), a Portuguese comedy directed by António Lopes Ribeiro, a director closely associated with the authoritarian Estado Novo of António de Oliveira Salazar. Film clips will be shown during the lecture.
