Iraqi Marshlands, Then and Now

In the mid-1970s, photographer Nik Wheeler recorded the everyday lives and architecture of the people who inhabited the southern marshes of Iraq—the population and region subsequently suffered from development efforts and politically motivated attacks during Saddam Hussein’s rule.

Following a discussion of the photos by Wheeler, Azzam Alwash, the director of Eden Again/Nature Iraq program examines the history and present day conditions of the marshlands.

A Q & A with Wheeler and Alwash moderated by UCLA professor Susan Slyomovics concludes the event.

Planned in conjunction with the exhibition Iraqi Marshlands Then and Now: Photographs by Nik Wheeler.  On view at the Fowler Museum at UCLA from December 14, 2008 to March 22, 2009.
