Dr. Wael Merza is a media consultant and freelance journalist in Dubai, as well as an independent researcher in the Middle East.
Instead of working toward economic and political reform that might lead to genuine development in the Middle East, there was a shift of focus in the region that led to the current stagnation of development. The discussion will center on the halted process of development such as how the stock markets were introduced to the region as an all encompassing alternative to the long and ‘risky’ road towards economic and political reform. In addition, Dr. Merza will discuss how “moderate” regimes were reduced to mean “pro-Bush-administration” and not “pro-America” in the sense of adopting policies that suit the administration’s priorities and its view of the political world.
