Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira celebrates his 100th birthday this year. Incredible as it sounds, this nonagenarian is still one of the most vital and unorthodox artists working in the world today. He directed his first film in 1931; it and the 45 films that followed not only span close to a century's worth of major technological changes in the cinema, from silents to digital video, but are marked by an astonishing rigor, erudition and wit. In Europe he is recognized as a master on a par with such legends as Rossellini and Bresson.

The UCLA Film and Television Archive, with the support of the Center for European and Eurasian Studies, will open a retrospective of Oliveira's work on Thursday, March 27, with a screening of "Voyage to the Beginning of the World," which was Marcello Mastroianni's last film as a actor.
