Movie Premiere and Benefit For MUJER: Guatemala Literacy and Vocational Program
Over two years ago, two graduating seniors from Loyola Marymount University (Ana Moraga and Tania Torres) and their professor (Jodi Finkel, UCLA PhD in political science 2001) started a literacy and vocational training program, MUJER, in the red light district (known as La Linea) of Guatemala City. In 2005 the women of La Linea formed a soccer team, the Railroad All Stars, to play in Guatemala's private leagues and make their demands for respect and safer conditions known. On Sunday Feb 10 at LMU we will be showing a documentary about the All Stars to raise money for MUJER's programs.
You can find out more about MuJER at www.mujer.cfsites.org Our programs range from literacy and vocational training to self-esteem workshops and violence prevention. Our long-term goal is to open an internet café/community center where we can host our current programs as well as expand our offerings of classes and workshops.
The tickets are $15 (cash only) and all proceeds will benefit MuJER. We will also be selling Guatemalan handicrafts. All unsold seats will be available for free to LMU and UCLA students. You can contact Professor Finkel, email@example.com for more information.
Graduating seniors: we are seeking to hire additional staff for our Guatemala City office this spring/summer.
We are currently teaching computer classes but only have 8 laptops and would like to increase that number to at least 12. If you have an extra laptop, we can give you a tax credit for it!
Parking is free. If you are driving on Lincoln, turn on to LMU Drive and enter the university. At the kiosk ask for a parking sticker to University Hall, the building on your right. Park under U-Hall and take the elevators to the ground floor and follow the signs to the Ahmanson Auditorium, U-Hall 1000
