The Center for the Study of Atlantic History at CSUN will sponsor the inaugural event in its annual speaker series on September 11, 7:00 pm, in the Whitsett Room located on the fourth floor of Sierra Hall on the campus of the California State University at Northridge.
Award-winning historian and University of Pittsburgh professor, Dr. Marcus Rediker, will discuss Pirates In The Atlantic World: The Real Pirates of the Caribbean. Professor Rediker is the author of five books and numerous articles on topics related to maritime and labor history. He has given lectures throughout the United States and abroad, in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Moscow, Sydney, and Tokyo. His writings have been translated into French, German, Greek, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. He has explored the "Golden Age" of Atlantic piracy in his book Villains of All Nations: Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age, which focuses on the authentic, as opposed to the Hollywood, history of the men and women who became pirates during the eighteenth century. Copies of this book will be available for purchase before and after the event.
The Center for the Study of Atlantic History is committed to bringing to CSUN internationally recognized scholars who specialize in various aspects of Atlantic history. The event is free of charge to students, faculty, and community members. Refreshments will be served.
