The Sokp'a Pavilion: Politics and a 19th-Century Korean Painting

An important Korean painting in LACMA’s collection is a screen depicting a famous private villa located in present-day Seoul. Yi Hanch’ŏl (1808-?), a celebrated late nineteenth-century painter, beautifully portrayed the property at the request of Regent Taewŏngun (1820–1898), father of King Kojong (r. 1897–1907). The Regent and King Kojong lived during a period of national turmoil, when Korea was seeking modernization and Westernization in the 19th century.

Hyonjeong Kim Han, Associate Curator of Korean Art LACMA, will analyze the painting by comparing it to photos of the site today and other paintings of villas in order to position it in the context of nineteenth-century art. She will also discuss the fascinating story about how the Regent gained possession over the villa.
