Democratization and the 'New Left' in Latin America

This one day symposium seeks to examine current political trends and the impact of recent presidential elections in Latin America.

The UCLA Latin American Center will host a symposium assessing the socio-cultural impact of recent presidential elections in Latin America. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Héctor Tobar will share his perspective on issues regarding the "New Left" in Latin America.  Mr. Tobar has been the foreign correspondent for the L.A. Times covering the recent presidential elections in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Nicaragua and Mexico.  The symposium will also feature additional commentary by UCLA professor, Robin Derby (Department of History).

Héctor Tobar is the Mexico City Bureau Chief for the Los Angeles Times.  He is also the author of the novel The Tattooed Soldier and his latest book is the non-fiction Translation Nation: Defining a New American Identity in the Spanish-Speaking United States.  In 2006, Héctor Tobar was listed as one of the "100 most influential Hispanics in the United States" by Hispanic Business Magazine.
