Art + Activism Series Presents “Activist Puppetry”

Anurupa Roy, who is based in New Delhi, India, believes that puppetry is one of the most powerful tools available for initiating social change. She holds diplomas in puppet theater from the Department of Puppetry at Dramatiska Institut, Stockholm, Sweden, and also from the Scoula Della Guaratelle, Naples, Italy. In Delhi she runs Kat-Katha, a puppet troupe that addresses such issues as gender, conflict resolution, and AIDS awareness. Her talk features a resonant performance by members of her “Activist Puppetry Against AIDS” WAC course module.

The Art + Activism series is a joint program of the UCLA Art|Science Center and the Art|Global Health Center at UCLA, with their respective departments, Design|Media Arts and World Arts and Cultures. Principal funding has been provided by the ArtsForum program of UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, with additional support from the two centers; the two departments; UCLA Center for Performance Studies; the Office of Instructional Development; UCLA Chancellor Norman Abrams; and the Regents Lecturer program.
