Presented by the Center for Social Theory & Comparative History and the Center for Chinese Studies.

Speakers will be:

Wang Hui is editor of Dushu (Reading) and author of, among others, China's New Order: Society, Politics, and Economy in Transition (Harvard Univ. Press, 2003). Wang Hui has been described as one of China's preeminent intellectuals. He is an impassioned critic of China's post-Mao social and economic reforms, which he condemns for causing economic inequalities, social polarization, and political corruption.

Sanjay Subrahmanyam, UCLA Professor of History and Director of the Center for India & South Asia. Professor Subrahmanyam's current research interest focuses on political culture and cultural history, especially of the Mughal empire.

Discussant will be Perry Anderson (Department of History and Department of Sociology).
