ABOUT THE TALK

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will discuss why the United Nations is crucial to the future of humanity in these troubled times. Wars have rendered millions of civilians homeless, growing violence and extremism have spread fear and countervailing extremism, and environmental degradation and health crises have emerged as threats to the long-term well-being of our planet. Many of these challenges are too big and complex for any one nation to confront, and require multilateral cooperation and carefully coordinated responses. There are now nearly 60 million refugees in the world, with more than half of them children. This is the largest number of refugees ever recorded and many of them are reliant on the UN for their survival. The war in Syria has caused some 300,000 deaths, the Ebola crisis claimed over 11,000 lives in West Africa, and ISIS continues to recruit fighters from abroad.

Secretary-General Ban has traveled widely and repeatedly appealed to the international community to end the atrocities ravaging Syria and intervene with groups like Boko Haram and ISIS, to take greater strides to protect the environment, and to advance gender equality and education. "I grew up in war," the Korean-born Secretary-General has said, "and saw the United Nations help my country to recover and rebuild. As Secretary-General, I am determined to see this organization deliver tangible, meaningful results that advance peace, development and human rights."
