Gender policy (성별화정책) was first introduced in Korea after the 4th World Women’s Conference held in Beijing in 1995. From then on, the policy gradually considered women and men with equity. The policy contains gender relations as its principle of order and structure. This lecture aims at decoding the politics and political institutions in Korea as the alliance of men is concealed and still remains under the guise of a democratic constitution. Concepts of the political science of “gender state” will be analyzed empirically with the help of concrete Korean gender policy. Hereby, the double role of gender can be realized: gender relations are constituted throughout the policy while gender itself also constitutes the policy.

Hae-Soon Kim is associate professor and chair of Korean Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main in Germany.  Her research and teaching fields and interests include Korean sociology, political sociology, comparative sociology, gender, migration sociology, culture, and political and social history.
